Mystery still surrounds much of the case. What appears clear is that Burke was with Forest Bloede after a night out with Burke's sister, Raurie, and other friends. A cab had dropped the two of them off at an ATM down the street from Forrest's apartment. Forrest withdrew $20 and they proceeded to walk the half block to Forrest's apartment, at which time they were accosted by two men.
Originally Mr. Bloede was charged with the murder, based upon the statement of a witness. After investigating, the police later released Forrest when the original witness recanted and relieved he had in fact heard the gunshot, not seen it. Two days later a new eye witness appeared, who supported Forrest's statement that they had in fact been accosted by two men with a gun.
Mr. Bloede has aided in putting together a composite sketch and viewed mug shot photos for potential suspects. He reports he and Burke were involved in a robbery and Burke was shot after a verbal confrontation.
